My review of Invader Zim
I had a strange relationship with Invader Zim. I did heard of it as a kid since a couple of Nickelodeon related games had him as a playable characters (I used to own a XBox game featuring Zim and other Nicktoons characters). But I didn't really seem to start watching the show until summer of 2010. I liked it but didn't seem to have an opinion on it. It's not until I sat down and watched the entire series that they aired on TV. Sadly, they scraped the rest of the series in 2002 because of its dark tone. Honestly, I have a much more greater opinion on the show today than I had 5 years ago. I viewed it as indifferent like how Mr Enter thinks of Uncle Grandpa although I did liked what I saw. Now, it made me hooked and somewhat bothered that Nick are just horrible at their executive meddling. What they did for cancelling the show seems like a lame excuse. I mean, I won't liked it as a kid, but as an adult, I really enjoyed it (and was indifferent, as I said, as a adolescence). The premise is amazing and seems something I'd write for. My favorite characters in the show were ZIM, GIR, and Dib. Though in order, GIR would be my favorite character as he's hilarious. Almost episode hit bull-eye and in my opinion, there's not a dud. Even the worst episode, is good at best. Gaz, Taster of Pork was barely good (had not for its hysterical moments, it would been a mediocre episode) and the reason for the only episode rated lower than an 8/10 is due to the mean-spiritedness in it. It's the only time I thought Dib was unlikable, but at least he got punishment which add up my score from a 5/10. My favorites are tough to chose because there's so many amazing episodes. Once I rewatch them again, I will go by the humor and occasional story-driven episodes to rank them my top 10 episodes. Voice acting is great and I enjoyed Richard Horvitz's performance as Zim. It's probably my favorite Horvitz role alongside Dab from The Angry Beavers (you can tell they have identical voice) and Billy from Billy and Mandy. It's interesting that Rodger Bumpass (better know as Squidward) voices Dib and Gaz's dad, who voice is a mix of Squidward and Dr. Gilliam (the purple doctor fish). GIR's voice is great, but his screaming/screeching is a little grating though. The show is like Ren and Stimpy. It's dark and ugly but in a funny way. I have to say that ZIM is the better show with such tones. Plus, the facial expression are hilarious. I especially laughed whenever a character scream, they often have their eyes look weird. Speaking of animation, the CG is amazing to look at and reminds of another sci-fi show, Futurama. So, in conclusion, ZIM was amazing show that should have never been canned so quickly. But then again, Nick executes are dicks. Oh well, this is one of my top 5 Nicktoons and probably my favorite sci-fi show in general.
