Ranking Pre Movie SpongeBob Part Three

Ranking Pre Movie SpongeBob Part Three

39. Welcome to the Chum Bucket (9/10)
The second Plankton episode of the season, this one focused more on SpongeBob's struggles of working at a different restaurant while missing his old boss. The whole thing happened because Plankton cheated at a card game (after a jinx from Krabs' comment that he never lost). It's a good showcase of having withdrawn from your actual workplace. There's a song sequence where SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs (who somehow sings in a Louis Armstrong voice) are singing their times without each other and it's a great scene. Plankton calls it a showtune. I'll be honest with you, the first half was a little slow, but it starts to pick up for the rest of the episode as it has Plankton trying to let SpongeBob adjust to his new surroundings. Most of the episode's highlights come from SpongeBob's refusal to work for Plankton, so he tries to act lazy on purpose so he can return back to the Krusty Krab while Plankton keeps finding ways to get him to make a Krabby Patty. The funniest scene of them all has to be where even as a robot, SpongeBob still refuses to do something and it drives Plankton to insanity. The episode ends a bit quickly, but it's still a fun watch.

38. Walking Small (9/10)
The last Plankton installment of the first season, this one stands out the most out of his episodes because it's set at Goo Lagoon and he isn't actually trying to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula. Instead, he’s trying to open a new and big version of the Chum Bucket. Due to his height, no one ever pays attention to him, so he had to rely on SpongeBob do all the dirty work. However, this ends up driving people away from the beach and SpongeBob is oblivious to Plankton’s plans until he finds out what’s really happening. While I personally prefer the other Plankton episodes from the season more, I do enjoyed the interactions between SpongeBob and Plankton. SpongeBob’s attempts at being assertive were amusing, especially the part where he ripped a volleyball and trumpeted like an elephant. The last few minutes is a good example of how to undo your bad deeds after being tricked by a tiny single cel creature. Not all jokes landed, but this is a fun Plankton episode, with an unusual locatio for him. On another note, the music editing is interesting as it introduced some of the tracks we would be familiar with later on the show’s run.

37. SpongeBob Meets the Strangler (9/10)
The second to last pre-movie episode, we got ourselves a classic episode where comedy plays a major role. SpongeBob encounters a criminal who is known for strangling people. However, after he walks away from the police, he freaks out and tries to get help but the other citizens are too scared to do anything with the strangler. So he looks for a bodyguard and the guy he chose looks too familiar. What made an episode like this works is how oblivious SpongeBob is during most of the episode. He did not know the man with a mustache is the strangler, but he unintentionally tortures him. And apparently it’s set on his birthday, as everyone in town celebrated his big day. Twice. The last couple minutes goes for Looney Tunes-esque gags where the strangler try to escape from SpongeBob and it’s just a funny moment. The episode ends with the strangler finally in jail with Patrick being his cellmate. This won’t be the last time we’ll be seeing Patrick in jail during the final scene.

36. Life of Crime (9/10)
One day, Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob and Patrick about stealing items without asking for permission while watching a movie of his own kind (in which he thinks it’s borrowing). At the park, they are bored until they find a balloon they could borrow. Then, it gets popped and they think they are criminals. So the duo decides to move away from Bikini Bottom and start living the wilderness. SpongeBob gives Patrick some candy bars, but Patrick ate it and thought he ate it again so accused SpongeBob of “stealing” his candy bar. The whole thing, it was actually Free Balloon Day. It’s a silly episode, but I can’t help but enjoy it a lot. As you may expect for season 2, the comedy is consistently strong. Who knew Krabs was a thief this whole time? We might know that in another episode, which isn’t much of a surprise the writers has started to make him a little more antagonistic. But what made the episode funny from start to finish is the fact that SpongeBob and Patrick think they are thieves for “stealing” a balloon while not knowing the whole events happened on a free balloon day. And that’s not all - during the middle of the episode, for the first time in the show, Patrick questioned the logic of fire being underwater and when he pointed it, the fire went out (he would activated it by kicking it). The last few minutes were full of comedy gold, even if it means by derailing Patrick’s intelligence by thinking he ate his own candy if he already eaten it and the same setup happened again with his lollipops.

35. Imitation Krabs (9/10)
It's the start of a plot that would later be recycled a few times throughout the show’s run, but it’s the only time this has ever happened within the first 6 seasons. One day, Plankton build a robot Krabs machine in order to get close to the secret Krabby Patty formula. He tricks SpongeBob thinking he’s the real Krabs while the actual Krabs is chasing after a penny. When the two interact with each other and argue who’s better, SpongeBob try to settle who’s the real Mr. Krabs. In my opinion, this is the best episode of its kind because while I didn’t mind a couple of them, they failed what made this episode great. Almost every joke lands and the plot is a classic. I always like the idea of a villain disguising as their archenemy just they can trick someone thinking they’re the real deal (in this case, Plankton as a robotic version of Mr Krabs). I can’t decide what scene I liked more: Krabs and Plankton yelling each other name while SpongeBob just stands there, Krabs getting upset about Squidward leaving, the whole debacle on who’s the real Krabs, and Krabs getting eaten by Hans (from the theme song, and which we already saw in Suds). They’re all hilarious scene to me. My only problem is how SpongeBob doesn’t even recognize his own boss, and I normally hate the trope of spotting the imposter, but this episode did in such an amusing way, I can’t help but enjoy it due to how it was executed. All in all, there’s no other episode that does the Plankton disguise plot better than this (and frankly since it’s been rehashed to death, they start to lose a bit of impact, not helping the fact that season 7 did it thrice).

34. Help Wanted (9/10)
The very first episode of the show. Produced in 1997, we all know the story: one day, SpongeBob is ready to apply for a job at the Krusty Krab, but he has a nervous breakdown until Patrick convinces him. Mr. Krabs agrees to hire SpongeBob if he can find a special spatula, but he and Squidward doubt it, and they laugh it off while SpongeBob goes on a quest. However, the Krusty Krab soon would be invaded by hungry anchovies. SpongeBob saves the day with the hydro spatula he bought and feeds the anchovies, which is enough for Mr. Krabs to give him a job. This episode doesn’t need any introduction because every character is perfectly introduced: SpongeBob is a determined person who is willing to get hired. Patrick is a goofy guy and while he isn’t a major idiot like he would be later on, here he’s someone who gives his best friend advice. Squidward is a grump who doesn’t like the idea of working with SpongeBob. Mr. Krabs loves money (as established near the end). These personality would stay consistent with the show, and Patrick’s character of giving SpongeBob advice would be phased as he become dumber. This is one of the finest pilot episodes in my opinions. When you watch the first episode of a tv show, they rarely reach the same high as this or a couple other shows. It’s almost a perfect score, but there’s a couple I didn’t liked - SpongeBob tripping after touching a nail and Squidward and Mr. Krabs laughing at the idea of SpongeBob getting a spatula. It’s weird how the two are on good terms since they normally can’t stand each other. The major highlights of Help Wanted has to be the part where SpongeBob feeds the anchovies while Tiny Tim plays in the background. It’s a perfect way to join a job. Its overall a great start to a beloved show.

33. The Camping Episode (9/10)
Real ones know this was the only non-season 4 episode to appear on the top 10 Best Day Ever list. The episode title says it - SpongeBob and Patrick are camping outside of their neighborhood and Squidward wants to prove he’s a good camper. However, Sponge and Pat warn Squidward about the possibility of attracting a sea bear, but he wouldn’t listen. Then he gets repeatedly mauled. I gotta say this, this was almost a perfect episode and it’s one of the funniest installments of the show. But just to get my flaw out of the way. There’s a couple of scenes that drag on for a while (the marshmallow scene where Patrick keeps burning his and the repeated mauls even if it was funny). The comedy is outstanding here and feels award winning at times. You can tell Dan Povenmire contributed to this one because there’s a musical number that has such a Phineas and Ferb vibe to it and that was the highlight of this episode. It’s a bottle episode where the only location is Conch Street which becomes rare afterwards, but the lack of location still made this episode a fun watch.

32. Can You Spare a Dime? (9/10)
Squidward and Mr. Krabs have a falling out over a dime that led to Squidward quitting his job at the Krusty Krab. Eventually, he became homeless and SpongeBob offers him to stay at his house for long as he likes. Over several months, Squidward begins to exploit SpongeBob for his requests and this drives the sponge to his breaking point, demanding to Mr. Krabs to give Squidward’s job back. Another classic episode that is best defined by SpongeBob and Squidward’s role being reversed - Squidward repeatedly bothers him and SpongeBob is the straight man in the situation who doesn’t want to be taken advantage. It’s not perfect though - Krabs and Squidward’s quarrel about a dime is like the most trivial matter to start a plot and that ending just doesn’t help matters as they fight again after Squidward got hired back. But for the most part, it’s just classic comedy and I like how the chemistry between SpongeBob and Squidward slowly deteriorate (those series of time cards led to a meta scene where the French narrator quit and they got a new narrator for waiting too much). It gets to a point where Squidward treats him like a maid and asks him to serve food, put on a puppet show. All of those moments were memorable, but towards the end, we are treated to one of the most satisfying moments on the show - SpongeBob standing up to Mr. Krabs for letting Squidward take over his room.

31. SB-129 (9/10)
After being annoyed with SpongeBob and Patrick, Squidward tries to find some peace and quiet. But he accidentally got locked in the freezer and ends up being in the future. After meeting future selves of SpongeBob and Patrick, Squidward asks them for the Time Machine and he goes on a time traveling adventure. The past isn’t any different as he still has to put up with SpongeBob and Patrick’s past selves. He broke the Time Machine and ends up being alone, but now he wants to go back to the present. For being the first episode involving time travel, this was a great start (although Sandy’s Rocket is the first episode of the show to have a sci-fi fare). I do think people overrate this one a little too much since it suffered from a rather annoying beginning that won’t feel different from a post-movie Squidward episode (his neighbors repeatedly bothering him), but the rest of the episode is just about perfect. It’s the first episode where Squidward is truly the main character and while not the first time this happens, SpongeBob only had a small role (his present self only appearing in the beginning and ending). The future and past scenes were iconic scenes, but the future one just hits with me more due. Every TV show imagine the future to be all flying cars and stuff but the SpongeBob artists imagined the future as in all chrome. The past isn’t a cheesy reference to a certain prehistoric cartoon, but rather it’s how prehistoric time was like. Oh, and there’s that meme that made it big nearly a decade ago, and the show starts to become a meme vehicle since then. The alone scene is a perfect scene because of how
Creepy it is and it makes Squidward realized he missed his regular life. Although it’s ruined by their demand to ask him to go Jellyfishing (in which he somehow invented), the ending is heartwarming as it shows that Squidward do care about seeing SpongeBob and Patrick again.

30. Gary Takes a Bath (9/10)
SpongeBob is determined to give Gary a bath, no matter how much the snail tries to avoid it. He keeps attempting, but they all failed. It’s such a simple episode that doesn’t really need much explanation. Apparently, a lot of people aren't fond of Gary Takes a Bath, but I can't help but enjoy it a lot. It plays out like a Looney Tunes short (specifically the Coyote vs the Roadrunner shorts) because SpongeBob always failed at attempting to give Gary a rest. We all know snails are cats in the world of Bikini Bottom, so the idea of being covered in water is a nightmare for them. Gary is smart enough to know that SpongeBob is tricking him to get him showered. All of Sponge's attempts of trying to give Gary a bath were hilarious to watch, especially the leap frog and the Pirate treasure (which of course the bathtub ended up being painted). A couple of them are random - like that shot of a lady and Mr. Krabs showing up out of nowhere while in a bathtub because he heard the word money. The episode does end on a very anticlimactic note where it's SpongeBob that actually ends up taking a bath.

29. Argh! (9/10)
After winning a board game, Mr. Krabs convinces SpongeBob and Patrick to become pirates and search for gold. As we head to these remaining 29 episodes, I'm going to start shortening my summary of the episode's plots and also make my episode reviews as short as possible (not that I have a deadline or anything, but I want to public this journal already). Argh! is a great episode that had a slight focus on Mr. Krabs, who lets SpongeBob and Patrick come around with him. I loved the sweaty running gag. Mr. Krabs repeatedly bothering SpongeBob at night is another hilarious moment since he somehow had the ability to teleport. The pirate moments were neat and a pirate plot can't be complete without a Flying Dutchman appearance. It's notable for the fact that Krabs is quite antagonistic here (the first time that this ever happened) and at the time, he was a fatherly figure who just loves money. However, the writers did start to exaggerate his love of money in this one just so he can gain gold. It doesn't come up as often in the three seasons, but rest assured you he will almost always get punished for it.

28. The Snowball Effect (9/10)
One snowy day at Bikini Bottom, everyone is having fun experiencing winter, except for one person. Squidward is just owning his own business until SpongeBob and Patrick repeatedly bother him with snowball. Then he eventually gets into the fun and go overboard with it. This feels like a sequel to Christmas Who? since they are both set at winter and involved Squidward being a Scrooge. While I prefer that special more, this was a cool episode (get it?). I loved seeing Bikini Bottom having fun with the snow, something that my hometown will barely get u less it’s a miracle. And yeah, this one also had the Bubblestand/Paper/Idiot Box formula - Squidward gets annoyed at SpongeBob and Patrick having fun but he decides to join in and go crazy with it. It’s my second favorite episode of its kind and the best episode of that plot was only a few episodes produced earlier.

27. No Free Rides (9/10)
After yet another failed boating school test, Mrs. Puff decided to give SpongeBob a driving license for free, which resulted his parents giving him a vehicle. However, given his horrible driving experience, she will soon regret it, so she tries to stop him from wrecking more havoc. Boating school episodes can be repetitive if you’re watching them all back to back due to how they end, but they can still be really enjoyable, like this. It’s one of my favorite boating school episode. Mrs. Puff’s second main role, and it expands on her character and give her more than just the teacher. She lives in a pink house where her front photo frame mirrored her movement. The episode starts on a really hilarious note where the French narrator is shouting and SpongeBob ends up hitting him. Then, we are treated to another funny sequence with some outstanding voice performances and drawings (SpongeBob writing an essay but gets nervous and Mrs Puff wanting to know what he wrote). And then she gave him his boating license and news get spread around fast as SpongeBob’s parents show up (their third appearance). We don’t see them very often, but it was a nice surprise. The climax is another highlight as it’s Mrs. Puff and SpongeBob outsmarting each other and it wasn’t until the police crash that SpongeBob was chasing around his own teacher. It, of course, ends on a predictable note (Mrs. Puff being in jail), but it’s still a pretty funny episode.

26. Survival of the Idiots (9/10)
SpongeBob and Patrick head to Sandy’s treedome, despite her warnings. The dome is covered up having a snowy day. They try having fun in the snow but the rowdiness keeps waking up Sandy. This was a very fun episode. I like the plot a lot as it gives us a look of how Sandy’s treedome functions during her hibernation. For most of her early season 2 appearances, there was a little story arc of her getting ready for winter and it ended with this episode (as spring begins at the very end of the episode). Plenty of hilarious lines and great drawings and you get yourself a very memorable wintered themed episode. But there’s one winter episode that I liked more than this.

25. Just One Bite (9/10)
Squidward doesn’t like Krabby Patty, so SpongeBob tries to convince him that they are delicious. But Squidward keeps denying the fact, until he finally tries one himself. Now he's desperate for a Krabby Patty. Ignoring the fact that Squidward did actually eaten Krabby Patty before (though it was by an accident), I like how this episode played out like Green Eggs and Hams - refusing to taste something good until you finally try it yourself and you want to eat more of it. Squidward's attempts of trying to get a Krabby Patty were hilarious and he only started changing his mind once SpongeBob wasn't around so he doesn't admit he likes them. Eventually, he dreamt about marrying a Krabby Patty, which was a strange sequence. Once we hit the climax of the episode, it starts off with a deleted scene which I don't understand it was removed. Nothing violent about it imo. It just felt so abrupt seeing Squidward enter the Krusty Krab to the vault that quickly. Then, we are treated a funny scene where SpongeBob make a smirk where he figures out that Squidward likes Krabby Patty after all and Squidward ends up eating so much, he blows up. And then he never eats burger again after this.

24. Something Smells (9/10)
On a random Sunday, SpongeBob makes his own sundae, when in reality it's actually a bunch of smelly stuff he put from his house, which gives him his bad breath. Since he has the day off, he says hi to everyone, but they all run away from him due to his breath. Patrick suggests that he's ugly, much to his horror. This is the very first episode that Carl "CH" Greenblatt received a writing credit for the show and he starts off on a very funny note. I feel like the main reason why season 2 is such a strong season is due to Springer and Greenblatt. Most of the jokes on their episodes hit and this episode was no exception. SpongeBob saying hi to everyone and they run off, the "ugly and proud" bit, the "LOOK AT IT!" were the best scenes of the episode. On a fun fact, this was the first season 2 episode to air on tv and like I said one time, the first few episodes really feel like season 1 with an upgraded animation style.

23. Valentine's Day (9/10)
It's Valentine's Day in Bikini Bottom and Patrick gets a tasty gift waiting for him. But he grows impatient as the day goes and goes on a rampage after receiving a handshake from SpongeBob. Usually when there's a plot about this day, it focuses on the romantic part, but here this is just a friendly Valentine's Day plot. It's a very funny episode revolving on a day about love and as usual Patrick gets most of the humor. Every single moment with him is just nonstop comedy - such as thinking SpongeBob got crushed by the heart rock, his many failed attempts of guessing what his gift is, the face he makes after getting a handshake, and his temper tantrum. The chocolate balloon sure looked delicious. All in all, one of season one's funniest installments.

22. The Algae's Always Greener (9/10)
Plankton switches place with Mr. Krabs after another failed attempt at stealing the Krabby Patty. He seems to enjoy it at first, but eventually he grows tired of it. So, this is an alternate timeline episode. The Wiki site considers this the first appearance where SpongeBob doesn't physically appear, but I still count even if it was an alternative version. Plankton is the show's strongest character and even in the very limited amount of spotlight episodes he had, there were no misses. Most viewers will consider this one of their favorites, but there's two more Plankton episodes I like more during this era. I liked the concept of Plankton living in Krabs' shoes - everything is the same except for him wearing Krabs' clothes, Pearl is his dad, and the crab himself is a villain who is naked. Plenty of funny moments in it as well, like "SO LONG SHRIMP", the face SpongeBob makes when Plankton told him he's using too much sauce, "SOILED IT", and naked Krabs.

21. Procrastination (9/10)
SpongeBob is assigned by Mrs. Puff to do a boating school essay. However, he keeps goofing off while trying to come out with a story. It turns out to be one giant dream sequence in the end. This is what a relatable episode looks like - you want to write an 800 word essay, but don't have the brainstorming, so you just slack off. It's such a great episode due to its plot (despite how it ends). It gets trippier as it goes on, and everything from where that certain scene to house fire was one big dream. Oh, and I forgot to mention this, but there's a deleted scene that Nickelodeon doesn't air (Nicktoons and Paramount+ has left it intact). Because of this, every time this episode airs on Nick, the colors are washed out. So yeah, this episode has a strange legacy.

20. Plankton's Army (10/10)
After failing to steal a Krabby Patty with a disguise, Plankton recruits his army and it turns out to be a bunch of hillbillies. They are his cousins and with the help of his family members, he invades the Krusty Krab. Well, this was one of the earliest episodes where Nickelodeon made a big deal of despite being 11 minutes long. It premiered on a holiday, if you’re wondering. But yeah, Plankton episodes have dominated the top 40 list and we still have a couple more episodes left focusing on him in this list. I really thought this episode was hilarious and it’s full of great moments like Clem introducing everyone ("ALRIGHT I GET IT!"), Plankton’s first name being Sheldon, “you planted glass!”, and Plankton running away screaming after seeing he’s part of a recipe. This is one of SpongeBob’s smallest roles as he’s basically absent for the most of the episode. Karen in the pre movie seasons is just known as Plankton’s computer wife but I will give this episode credit - this is when she starts to emote beyond the sarcastic wife. She’s talkative and hyperactive more than usual here especially when she laughs at Plankton’s first name. Honestly the last half of season 3 (the ones that premiered after 2002) admittedly felt weaker than the first half of the season since you can tell the crew were ready to do the movie but this is easily my favorite episode in the back half of the season. But we still got about 8 episodes left in this list.

19. F.U.N. (10/10)
The second Plankton episode of the series and his third appearance. Already this early on, the writers tried giving him a sympathetic side as no one in Bikini Bottom like him. So SpongeBob decided to be on friendly terms with the tiny green creature, which Mr. Krabs catches him on the act. It’s a very iconic episode that showcases SpongeBob and Plankton’s relationship. Despite his boss being bitter rivals, SpongeBob always tries to be friendly with Plankton. The beginning is an interesting chase scene where SpongeBob go after a Krabby Patty. That one scene where the town congrats him is a little strange due to the crowd having a female voice despite the lack of women. The episode gets even better afterwards with a bonding with a sponge and a plankton. We are treated with a catchy song about being fun (which is actually an abbreviation). The climax kicks in with SpongeBob realizing Plankton tricks him by giving him a patty and the episode just ends there. Season 1 was very strong on Plankton episodes but there one more episode focusing on him that I liked better…

18. Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy III (10/10)
The third installment of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy doesn’t even feature the titular elderly superheroes that much. They disappear after the first scene and instead it revolves around SpongeBob and Patrick looking after their lair. Despite this, it’s a classic episode featuring the debut of a memorable villain named Man Ray. Lots and lots humorous moments throughout it especially educating Man Ray to be good (but all attempts failed, which is accompanied by the laughing belt) and trying to want a bank. Not to mention, the orb of confusion is another riotous moment, which makes people act idiotic. Since I’m at the top 20 section of the journal, I’m making my reviews brief and giving you my reason for the ranking

17. No Weenies Allowed (10/10)
SpongeBob attempts to get in a sports club, but he must prove his worth by being a tough guy to no avail. This is one of season 3’s strongest efforts and it’s all thanks to a Looney Tunes-esque plot where SpongeBob wants to prove himself by being a macho man and all his attempts fail. The scenes with the Weenie Hut guys are interesting because they were voiced by the writers of this episode and it feels like we’re listening to Paul Tibbitt and Kent Osborne having a conversation. The episode gets funnier once Patrick enters the scene and having himself get beat up is what led to SpongeBob funny enter the club…but it ended on an anticlimactic note. Still a funny ending though since he’s still a weenie.

16. Christmas Who? (10/10)
The first ever 22 minute special of the show and it’s a holiday themed episode. I won’t actually call this my favorite TV Christmas special of all time, let alone SpongeBob (which we get to that many years later), but it’s still an iconic one. Aside from a moment in season 1 where Patrick randomly mentioned Christmas, no one has ever heard of the holiday and Sandy introduced SpongeBob to the day. This episode feels very season 1-esque to its story driven plot while the funny scenes we get still feel right at home for season 2. And it’s accompanied with a great song (where Mr Krabs has a high pitched voice for some reason). It gets pretty sad towards the beginning of act 2 as SpongeBob is let down by Santa Claus not coming to town. Squidward rubs it in his face, of course, but eventually, he realizes his mistake and decides to dress up as the jolly old man to cheer SpongeBob up. It’s such a wholesome moment that it got the attention of everyone in town and this lead to Squidward getting rid of everything he owns. After a successful haul, Squidward got to see the real Santa and the SpongeBob portion of the special ends. Did I forget to mention that this the official first appearance of Patchy and Potty? Their segments last about a few minutes and they are deliberately low budget and that’s part of their charm. People either like or hate them, but Tom Kenny is very dedicated to playing this character that he’ll sometimes show up to events as a pirate. All in all, this is automatically the best pre movie special because the season 3 specials don’t reach the same heights as this one.

15. Nasty Patty (10/10)
SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs think they murdered the health inspector when he came to visit after trying out a disgusting burger. Now this is how you do dark humor - everything about this episode is classic and it felt like you're watching a true crime/mystery show. This is the writing debut of Kaz and his writing/artistic skills shined here. Every joke in this one really hit and I really loved the vibes for this one. I always find it odd that Squidward was absent in this one episode. I guess he took a day off and avoided whatever mess SpongeBob and Krabs got into. The police were portrayed decently in this episode, not suspecting a thing about SpongeBob and Krabs' crime until the health inspector shows up and despite all the trouble they went through, passed the inspection.

14. Sleepy Time (10/10)
SpongeBob visits his friends' dreams during a good night's sleep.

13. Frankendoodle (10/10)
An artist loses his pencil and it falls under the sea where SpongeBob creates a doodle version of himself, but he causes havoc.

12. Wet Painters (10/10)
Mr. Krabs orders SpongeBob and Patrick to paint his house.

11. Plankton! (10/10)
